Disruptive Events and Traumatization Among Women Experiencing Homelessness in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Homelessness constitutes one of the most extreme expressions of social exclusion and is associated with multiple violations of rights, including severe impacts on mental health. This study describes the prevalence of cases compatible with a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) in relation to the characteristics of events reported as traumatic and the experience of Stressful Life Events (SLEs) among a sample of women experiencing homelessness in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina. An exploratory descriptive study was conducted using an intentional snowball sample of 72 women experiencing homelessness. Structured interviews were administered, and statistical analysis was performed. The results highlight that the majority of potentially traumatic events were associated with experiences of sexual violence during childhood and adolescence, and that the prevalence of cases with a possible diagnosis of PTSD/CPTSD was high (33%). Furthermore, a relationship was observed between SLEs associated with histories of housing instability and unintended pregnancies and cases with a possible diagnosis of PTSD/CPTSD. The study underscores the need for public policies that address the mental health of people experiencing homelessness from an intersectional gender perspective.
