First Documented Trans-Atlantic Recapture of a Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) from the Republic of Congo to Argentina after 11 Years

On 13 February 2025, an adult female leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) tagged in the Republic of Congo was captured during the trial of an in-water study off San Clemente del Tuyú, northern Argentina (Fig. 1). The turtle was first sighted from a boat (36º31’9.5’’S and 56º39’23.0’’W) and then captured with a hoop net to collect a genetic sample and data on sex and morphometrics. The turtle measured 142 cm in curved carapace length, although the caudal peduncle was broken. A monel tag, KUD16636, was found on the turtle’s rear right flipper. This tag was in very good condition, well-closed, with no observed tears nor enlargement at the tagging location. Despite the tag information being legible, it had to be cleaned to remove a barnacle 2 mm in width and some biofouling. The left flipper had a scar compatible with a lost tag scar. The turtle was not tagged again and was released at the location of recapture.
