Energy transitions in Argentina: agendas, debates and current academic perspectives

The energy transition has become increasingly relevant in recent years as a process of change and transformation of patterns and forms of energy use (including source, fuel or engine). It represents a paradigm shift towards a secure, affordable, reliable and post-fossil fuel energy system. The impact of the energy transition on the academic agenda of Social and Environmental Sciences has become central as it highlights a critical contemporary political-cultural challenge. Therefore, the main objective of this article is to understand how this process is interpreted and analyzed within the dominant academic production and how it is developed academically in Argentina. Starting from the concepts of energy transition and academic production circuits, the article presents an overview. It compares both academic circuits in terms of their conceptual analysis, problems presented, debates, relationships, articulations and agendas. The particular and distinctive profiles of scientific and academic production in Argentina make it a case of relevance of peripheral centres, with a substantial expansion of their scientific capacities in recent decades. Methodologically, a bibliometric analysis was carried out using the central indexed databases. At the global level, Scopus (Elsevier) was used for scientific production in English, while in Argentina open-source repository networks were used. Scientific production in English-speaking spaces tends to encompass various disciplinary analytical perspectives, generally adopts a global scale perspective and understands the process on a large scale and magnitude, with extensive academic development and debate on the temporality of the transition. In Argentinean academic studies on the energy transition, discussions within academic circuits are framed in different interpretive frameworks, identify specific problems and have limited articulation, relationships and academic dialogue. Furthermore, these two interpretations have limited academic articulation and debate.
La transition énergétique est un concept devenu clef pour rendre compte des processus de changement et de transformation des modes d'utilisation de l'énergie. Son appréhension relève également d’un changement de paradigme vers un système énergétique sécurisé, abordable, fiable et « post-combustibles fossiles ». L'impact de la transition énergétique sur l'agenda académique des sciences sociales et environnementales est devenu central car il met en lumière un défi politico-culturel contemporain crucial. Ainsi, l'objectif principal de cet article est de comprendre comment ce concept est interprété et analysé dans la production académique dominante anglo-saxonne et comment, en comparaison, il se développe académiquement en Argentine, conçue comme un cas pertinent pour illustrer les productions des circuits académiques dits périphériques. Pour cela, nous avons comparé ces deux circuits académiques (anglo-saxon et argentin) et avons observé les différences qui s’y opèrent en termes d'analyse conceptuelle, de problèmes présentés, de débats, de relations entre notions et circuits, et d'agendas de recherche. Du point de vue méthodologique, le travail s’appuie sur une analyse bibliométrique : à l'échelle mondiale, Scopus (Elsevier) a été utilisé pour analyser la production scientifique en anglais ; à l’échelle de l’Argentine, des réseaux de dépôts en libre accès ont été utilisés. Les résultats indiquent que la production scientifique issue du circuit académique dominant tend à englober différents cadres analytiques disciplinaires, adopte généralement une perspective à l'échelle mondiale et appréhende le processus de transition à grande échelle. Dans les études académiques argentines sur la transition énergétique, les débats sont marqués par la mobilisation de différents cadres interprétatifs, les travaux entrent par des problèmes spécifiques et relèvent plus souvent d’analyses empiriques, et les différents cadres et débats semblent relativement cloisonnés et peu connectés. Au final, entre circuit académique anglo-saxon et circuits argentins, les frontières sont peu poreuses et les articulations restent rares.
