This article proposes an analysis of the “plagiarisms” that Augusto Roa Bastos committed in his novel Yo el Supremo, based on his main source, the historical biography of Rodríguez de Francia, El Supremo Dictador, written by the historian Julio César Chaves. To achieve this, I observe some notable marks in the copy of this biography that belonged to Roa Bastos, which was recently found in a garbage dump in Buenos Aires. These marks show the relationship that Roa maintained with Chaves’ volume and with historiography as an official discourse, and contribute to deepening the meanings that the novel continues to create.
