Our paper proposes to analyze the relationship between rational language and encyclopedia in an early phase of Leibniz’s thought. Indeed, around 1670, Leibniz conceived the project of the encyclopedia, whose objective was to compile and organize, as far as possible, the accumulated human knowledge throughout history. Although the plan itself was not entirely original, the demands that Leibniz placed on the endeavor and the way it was to be carried out bore from the outset the innovative imprint of brilliant anticipations. Indeed, it was not merely a matter of organizing and arranging knowledge in some way, but rather that such an order had to be both demonstrative and inventive, which required a set of methodological principles that, in an initial stage, were inspired by the Dissertatio de arte combinatoria of 1666. Thus, the analytic-synthetic logic proposed in that work provided the fundamental structure for the first encyclopedic project. Moreover, the very task of dissecting and analyzing concepts also laid the groundwork for the preliminary ideas of the universal characteristic in terms of a rational, universal, and operative language of and for the demonstrative-inventive encyclopedia. Although this was an initial and youthful project, its influence would be felt throughout Leibniz’s entire intellectual life.
