La Hypnerotomachia Poliphili: la Antigüedad como guía en sueños

La Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (Venecia, 1499), atribuida al fraile veneciano Francesco Colonna, es la reconstrucción verbal y visual de un sueño cuyo significado pretende ser ejemplificador: un viaje de autoconocimiento y edificación moral del alma en el que juegan un papel decisivo las obras legadas por el mundo antiguo. La Antigüedad –que constituye un tema dominante del relato y de las xilografías- es representada de dos maneras: 1- como los restos dispersos de un pasado ejemplar que requiere de una pericia arqueológica- filológica para llegar a un distante presente. 2- como un espacio determinado por la mixtura cultural y temporal, en línea con la tradición anticuaria véneto- paduana. Esta antigüedad imprecisa -egipcia, griega, romana, quattrocentesca- se presenta también como una guía moral difícil de descifrar y pone en tela de juicio el carácter pedagógico y ejemplar del sueño.
The Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (Venice, 1499), attributed to the Venetian friar Francesco Colonna, is the verbal and visual reconstruction of a dream whose meaning is intended to be exemplary: a journey of self-knowledge and the moral edification of the soul, in which the works inherited from the ancient world play a decisive role. Antiquity – which constitutes a dominant theme in the narrative and the woodcuts – is represented in two ways: 1) as the scattered remnants of an exemplary past that requires archaeological and philological expertise to reach a distant present; 2) as a space defined by cultural and temporal mixture, in line with the VenetianPaduan antiquarian tradition. This imprecise antiquity – Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Quattrocento – is also presented as a moral guide that is difficult to decipher, calling into question the pedagogical and exemplary nature of the dream.
