Descripción
In Tucumán, Argentina, more than 60% of the area planted with cereals has been replaced by sugarcane because of the growing demand of bioethanol production. The change in the sugarcane geographic distribution brought about the adoption of novel agronomic techniques. Although Diatraea saccharalis is a well-studied sugarcane pest, it is necessary to evaluate the effect of these new agricultural conditions on the infestation intensity to prevent sugarcane damage. The aims of this study were to determine the effect of nitrogen fertilization and irrigation with citrus industry residues on the infestation intensity (I.I. %) of D. saccharalis, and to evaluate the oviposition of this pest in sugarcane fertilized with different nitrogen sources. Three trials were implemented under field and semi-field conditions. The first field trial included two different fertilizer sources, urea (48% N) and CAM (27% N), applied in 2 kg/row doses, and a non-fertilizer treatment (control). Each plot consisted of three replicates of 20 rows 100 m long each. The second field trial compared sugarcane irrigation with residue from the citrus industry, clean water, and non-irrigation. Each plot consisted of three replicates of 50 rows, 100 m long each, irrigated with a 50 mm sheet. In both trials, I.I.% was evaluated. Finally, for the semi-field trial, urea and CAM were used as fertilizers at 2kg/ row. Soil without fertilizer was used as control. The experimental unit consisted of 1m3-metal cages covered with voile, containing six LCP 85-384 sugarcane pots, three with fertilizer and three without fertilizer. When the plants had five true leaves, 10 pairs of D. saccharalis adults were placed per cage. The number of postures per plant and the number of eggs per posture were counted. A significant difference in I.I.% was observed in the treatment with urea, compared to CAM and the control. Also, a significant difference in I.I.% was observed in plants irrigated with citrus effluents compared with clean water and no irrigation. Finally, a higher number of eggs were observed when sugarcane plants were fertilized with urea.
