Protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibiting herbicides (PPO) often induce phytotoxicity symptoms in soybeans, although their potential impact on yield remains uncertain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the phytotoxic effects of PPO-inhibiting herbicides along with very longchain fatty acid synthesis inhibitors (VLCFAs) on visible injury and soybean yield. The experiment was conducted in Sundblad (Buenos Aires province, Argentina), using a randomized complete block design with split plots in a factorial arrangement with three replications. Three pre-emergent treatments (PRE; whole plot) were evaluated: fomesafen + S-metolachlor, sulfentrazone + S-metolachlor, and pyroxasulfone + flumioxazin, which were combined with four post-emergent treatments (POST; subplot) applied at the V4 growth stage: no POST, glyphosate + fomesafen; glyphosate + fomesafen + S-metolachlor; glyphosate + lactofen; plus an untreated check (UTC; no chemical intervention). Before reaching V4, PRE treatments with fomesafen + S-metolachlor and sulfentrazone + S-metolachlor caused mild chlorosis and reduced biomass. In contrast, pyroxasulfone+flumioxazin resulted in severe chlorosis and lower biomass, affecting canopy closure. POST treatments with glyphosate + fomesafen and glyphosate + fomesafen + S-metolachlor produced light to moderate phytotoxicity. Glyphosate + lactofen caused the most intense chlorosis and leaf deformation. These differences were reflected in Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) measurements. Pyroxasulfone + flumioxazin with no POST yielded 12.4% less than the UTC (6,418 kg ha-¹), while sulfentrazone + S-metolachlor followed by glyphosate + lactofen yielded 11.9% less than the exact same PRE treatment with no POST (6,166 kg ha-¹). Soil properties, high moisture during the growing season, and application timing close to crop emergence may have influenced the results achieved.
