Descripción
Supplementary irrigation is rapidly expanding in northeastern Santa Fe, Argentina, although its effects on soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics remain poorly documented. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementary irrigation on SOC stocks, combining field sampling with SOC dynamics simulations using the AMG model.. Irrigated and rainfed fields were compared at three agricultural sites in northeastern Santa Fe. Soil organic carbon stocks were determined down to 60 cm depth, and SOC dynamics were simulated using the AMG model based on climatic, edaphic, and management information. At all sites, SOC decreased with depth and no significant differences were detected between irrigated and rainfed treatments for total SOC stock (0–60 cm). Observed SOC values ranged from 60 to 66 Mg C ha⁻¹ and were consistent with previous regional reports. Simulations indicated that irrigation increased carbon inputs through higher crop productivity, but also enhanced mineralization rates, resulting in negative carbon balances under both treatments, although less negative under irrigation. The AMG model adequately reproduced the general SOC trends, although it showed high sensitivity to initial SOC values. These results suggest that, under the evaluated conditions, supplementary irrigation did not significantly increase SOC stocks during the study period and highlight the need for long-term evaluations in irrigated agricultural systems.
