The developing novel livestock farming management in native forest areas of the semi-arid Chaco region, is crucial to increment productivity and sustainability, simultaneously. The objective of this thesis was, to evaluate the effect of protein-energy supplementation on grazing intake, animal performance, diet selection and ingestive behavior of beef cattle, during the dry season in a silvopastoral forest system. In trial I, there was investigatd the effect of supplementation on dry matter intake (DMI, kg) and DMI as percentage live weight (%) and live weight gain (ADG, kg). The experimental design was completely randomized using a mixed linear model, considering the supplementation treatment with two levels as a fixed factor (0 g, the control treatment, TC and 552 g of DM with cotton seed per day, the supplemented treatment, TS). Twenty weaning calves (10 per treatment) were for monitored 21 days. The initial weight was 119 ± 2.80 kg and 113 ± 2.90 kg for TS and TC, respectively. There were not significant differences between treatments for CMS kg (P=0.23), CMS % (P=0.49) and ADG (P=0.08). In trial II, ingestive behavior was evaluated considering selectivity, explored area and trajectory. For selectivity, a Beta (β) regression design was used and the Ivlev index was calculated, for the explored area and the trajectory a nested plot design was used. Six GPS collars were used, 3 per treatment, deployed between days 8 and 21. Diet composition and selectivity did differ space treatments of supplementation (P<0.05). In this regard, TS selected more implanted grasses GI, native GN species, less woody species and dicotyledonous than TC. The interaction of what with what the supplementation treatment significant (P<0.05). Trajectories were similar between treatments (P=0.30). It is concluded that supplementation after 21 days does not affect total grazing intake and animal performance, but rather ingestive behavior.
