Abstract. The human economical activities must be compatible with the sustainable management in order to achieve the species biological conservation. It is well known, that after a harvesting, the forest shows a dynamic and species composition different to the original. Knowing the changes that logging produce in all components of the system allow us to develop management alternatives with minor impacts. The objective of this work was to evaluate the biodiversity change, abundance and biomass of the understory along forest management cycle in a Nothofagus pumilio forest where carried out a shelterwood treatment. The sample was carried out in a pure forest of Tierra del Fuego (Argentina) along six forest management situations (post-harvesting situations and different phases of forest development) of a middle-high site class (from III class to I). The number of species, abundance and biomass were modified vastly after a shelterwood. When the canopy was open, the studied parameters increase significantly, and then fall drastically when the forest reach the initial growth phase. Subsequently, it was recover the average values of a virginal forest. The impact of the forest management in the understory biodiversity is analyzed and discussed. We could conclude that Lenga forest management by a shelterwood system (considering as the analysis unit at the rotating shift) do not produce a higher impact in the understory than that produced by other human activities within the forest.
