Endophytic entomopathogenic fungi (EEPF) can promote plant growth and negatively affect herbivorous insect pests when in planta. This dual role of EEPF has not been previously reported for Metarhizium in cotton. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of two local isolates of Metarhizium robertsii on the growth of cotton plants and the oviposition of Anthonomus grandis on squares infiltrated with the fungus. Cotton seeds were soaked in conidial suspensions and planted in 20 L pots maintained under the ambient environmental conditions of Chaco province. Several growth parameters were measured regularly over a 60-day period. Compared to the control, treatments with isolates M. robertsii INTA06 and INTA51 significantly increased the fresh mass of above- and below-ground parts of cotton plants by the end of the vegetative stage, with strain INTA51 producing a greater stimulatory effect. For use in oviposition assays, cotton squares were excised from greenhouse-grown plants and incubated with their pedicels immersed in conidial suspensions. After 48 h, one gravid female was placed in each square for 24 h; feeding and oviposition punctures were recorded. No differences were observed in feeding; however, oviposition was drastically reduced on squares treated with both fungal strains.
