The cotton value chain is strategic for territorial development in many countries, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean, and it is essential to consider all production processes involved, from the field to the garment. Research, extension and development play a fundamental and strategic role in achieving sustainable and competitive production, value addition and marketing of Latin American cotton. Cotton research is essential to address productivity gaps, promote efficient use of resources and improve producers' quality of life. The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) has participated since 1986 in the organization of the Latin American Cotton Research and Development Association (ALI-DA), which brings together most cotton-producing countries in the region. Since its creation, ALIDA meetings were regularly held every two years; however, the frequency declined in the recent years due to COVID and other reasons.
