Descripción
Dione (=Agraulis) vanillae (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) is one of the most common butterflies in parks, gardens, and vacant lots in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and it is very popular because of its bright orange wings. This species ranges from central Argentina to the southern United States. Its larvae feed on the foliage of Passiflora spp., causing significant damage in passion fruit–producing regions (Rodríguez-Dimaté et al. 2016, Fla. Entomol. 99: 130–132). In October 2024, a few dead D. vanillae larvae were found hanging upside down by their prolegs from a potted Passiflora edulis Sims plant (Fig. 1A) on a terrace in Flores, Buenos Aires. Upon collection, the cadavers disintegrated. All these features are typical of baculovirus infections. Therefore, further studies were conducted to elucidate the etiology of the disease
