- Descripción
- Due to the multiple physiological and psychological changes that occur during infancy, this stage is decisive in human development. Those changes, together with other factors such as children’s family environment or place of residence, influence their nutritional needs and eating habits. This study was conducted with a population of 35 children aged between 1 and 10 years old. These children were beneficiaries of the Pro Huerta Program carried out in the rural area of Mogna, which is situated in Jáchal, Province of San Juan. Given the size of the sample and having their parents and / or tutors previously given consent for these infants to be included, the whole group participated in the present investigation. Research results show that 74% of the population showed Normal Nutritional Status and 20% had a prevalence of overweight, without finding values for obesity. Furthermore, a much lower percentage of the participants (6%) presented low weight. More than half of the group revealed an inadequate consumption of fruits and vegetables. Some of the aspects which may influence nutritional status were analyzed in this study. Among all the studied variables, the level of education of the children’s caregivers, as well as their level of consumption of fruits and vegetables and the fact of perceiving social benefits (Universal Child Allowance and Pro Huerta Program) proved to be significant factors. Finally, it is important to highlight the fact that these findings agree with current global trends which also suggest that the nutritional status of children is strongly connected to the availability of food along with the habits and customs of the child's family and school environment. That is why, with respect to children and caregivers, nutrition education and promotion is recommended. It is known that imitation and global consolidation of behaviours, values and lifestyles take place within the family context. Eating habits are established during childhood; here it is the family environment which contributes to transmit behaviours to their children by establishing food preferences that vary according to their culture and customs, as well as the availability of food in the area where they reside and their economic access to those food choices. It is necessary to reconsider the implementation of the Pro Huerta Program in a small-scale production, after evaluating the factors which influence the impact of the program and its resources (physical, economic and environmental) so as to make the necessary improvements and to implement them in a near future to benefit the whole population. To conclude, actions are required at all levels, ranging from measures taken at home, at school and also in education programs that provide food assistance (Pro Huerta); as well as in all those aspects that directly or indirectly influence children’s eating behaviours.
