Given the importance of Morrison’s contribution to the representation of African American culture, we believe that the translation of her works poses both a challenge and an opportunity. A Mercy contains several instances of criticism to colonial practices, which is why approaching the study of its translation with the tools of Postcolonial Translation Studies may help uncover the layers of meaning present in the text. For this purpose, this study will analyze the Postcolonial textual features of A Mercy (2008) and how effectively the strategies employed by translator Jordi Fibla in Una bendición (2009) convey these Postcolonial traits. At this point, another crucial matter has to be settled, the question as to why it is important or desirable that the ideology that underlies the text or the political stance that the author has taken be preserved in the translation. Given the fact that Bassnett & Lefevere make a point of highlighting the key role of a translator, the agency of the translator’s view in the rewriting, and the importance of the decisions he or she takes at the moment of translating, that question is valid indeed. Postcolonial critique is the result of centuries of struggle between dominant and subjugated cultures, between colonizing and colonized, and to omit or disregard its marks in a translation might hinder the effort of the oppressed to achieve recognition and equality.
