The media as constructor of meaning and behaviour: the break of the binary opposition of good and evil in Todd Phillips’ film Joker

The present study analyses the role of the media as a constructor of meaning in Todd Phillips’ film Joker (2019) and how culturally conceived notions of good and evil in society are problematized. Despite prior scholars’ shared interest in our object of study, a collective analysis of the relation among the media, meaning-making and audience reception was not addressed. Due to the increasing mass consumption of audiovisual language, it is essential to enhance media literacy by way of understanding its technical determinants. Thereby, the aim of this study is twofold: to explore which technical determinants in the syntax of audiovisual language operate as constructors of meaning, and to analyze its effects on masses. This research, foregrounded on perspectives on film syntax as well as on those concerning the creation and reception of the mediated image in society, particularly through art mechanically reproduced, followed a content analysis methodology with qualitative analysis of the scenes and sequences that represent the media within the film and of character mutation throughout it. Findings reveal that by way of audiovisual language, the represented media can affect behaviour in masses and reinforce the binary opposition of good and evil in society. Secondly, that superficial reading of the film results in an interpretation of a victim-victimizer shift that simultaneously represents a break of this binary opposition; finally, that in-depth reading can lead to an understanding of character’s mutation in terms of notoriety gained through mediation of images. In sum, our research proves that audiovisual language does contribute to the creation of meaning and therefore, advocates for more analytical readings of media content and further exploration of enabling language practices in the classroom
El presente trabajo analiza el rol de los medios de comunicación como constructores de significado en la película Joker (2019) de Todd Phillips, y cómo se problematizan las nociones culturalmente concebidas del bien y el mal en la sociedad. A pesar del interés compartido por investigadores en nuestro objeto de estudio, en sus trabajos no se había abordado un análisis conjunto de la relación entre los medios, la construcción de significado y la recepción por parte de la audiencia. Debido al creciente consumo masivo del lenguaje audiovisual, resulta esencial fomentar la alfabetización mediática a través de la comprensión de sus determinantes técnicos. Así, el objetivo de este estudio es doble: por un lado, explorar qué determinantes técnicos en la sintaxis del lenguaje audiovisual operan como constructores de significado; por otro, analizar sus efectos en las masas. Esta investigación, fundamentada en perspectivas sobre sintaxis cinematográfica como así también en aquellas relacionadas con la creación y recepción de la imagen mediatizada en la sociedad–particularmente mediante el arte reproducido mecánicamente –, siguió una metodología de análisis de contenido con enfoque cualitativo, centrado en el análisis de escenas y secuencias que representan a los medios dentro del filme y en la mutación del personaje principal a lo largo de la narrativa. Los hallazgos revelan que, mediante el lenguaje audiovisual, los medios representados pueden influir en el comportamiento de las masas y reforzar la oposición binaria entre el bien y el mal en la sociedad. Segundo, que una lectura superficial del filme puede resultar en una interpretación basada en el cambio de rol entre víctima y victimario, lo que a la vez representa una ruptura de la oposición binaria; por último, que una lectura profunda puede conllevar a la compresión de la mutación del personaje en términos de notoriedad adquirida a través de la mediación de imágenes. En suma, nuestra investigación demuestra que el lenguaje audiovisual sí contribuye a la creación de significado y, por tanto, aboga por lecturas más analíticas del contenido mediático, así como por una mayor exploración de prácticas lingüísticas posibilitadoras en el aula.
