A brief journey through the history of Cuban zarzuela takes us to its most representative composers and works. Currently, ought to the lack of critical editions of their scores, recordings are the most feasible way to musically appreciate what their authors original conception was and to engage with the canonical performance models that have guided those who have explored the genre to this day. Four of these historical recordings were produced by the Puerto Rican sound engineer Fernando Montilla, a key figure in the Ibero-American recording and music field of the last century. Understanding the genesis of these projects and the particularities of each one, reveals the importance of these recordings, which have contributed to diffusion and preservation of these heritage works both in Cuba and beyond its borders. - Fuente
