Introducción: La automedicación se define como la ingestión de medicamento de venta libre por iniciativa propia. Objetivos Determinar la prevalencia de la conducta de Automedicación en estudiantes del 5ª año de la Facultad de medicina de la Universidad. Nacional del Nordeste (UNNE). Establecer cuáles son los medicamentos más frecuentemente consumidos en automedicación. Identificar posibles motivaciones para la automedicación, así como las fuentes de información empleadas para esta conducta Material y Método. La población incluyó estudiantes de la Universidad Nacional del Nordeste (UNNE) pertenecientes al 5ª año de la carrera de Medicina. Encuestados al azar Los instrumentos fueron encuestas, cuestionarios de selección múltiple con preguntas estructuradas y semiestructuradas, Resultados: Se observó que en el 92% de los alumnos de 5ª año de la facultad de Medicina han empleado uno o más medicamentos por cuenta propia, sin prescripción médica en los últimos 6 meses. Siendo los más utilizados los analgésicos antiinflamatorios y antifebriles en un 84%. Siendo el principal motivo en un 50 % la presencia de síntomas leves. Recibieron información en un 40 % de una prescripción anterior Discusión: Un elevado porcentaje de alumnos incurren en esta práctica, lo cual concuerda con otros estudios realizados. Al momento de optar por un medicamento nuestra población se volcó a los Analgésicos, debido a la convicción de la banalidad de la signosintomatología . Los antibioticos son un grupo de medicamentos que en nuestro trabajo ocupan el 2ª lugar de frecuencia, representando un alto riesgo al favorecer la aparición de cepas resistentes Conclusión Se concluye que los alumnos de medicina presentan un elevado porcentaje de automedicación a pesar de conocer el alto riesgo que dicha conducta representa
