The article “Mies in Patagonia (II)”, as a continuation of the analysis initiated in the first part, deepens the philosophical, literary, and conceptual debate surrounding the differences between faithful copying/forgery and generative recreation or interpretation of the archetype. 1. Conceptual Framework and Axes of Debate In this second installment, three main theoretical-philosophical sources are drawn upon to substantiate the validity of the Casa Médanos project (by Mario Corea) in Río Negro compared to the famous Barcelona Pavilion (by Mies van der Rohe): Jorge Luis Borges (Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote): Uses the allegory of Menard—who did not want to copy the Quixote, but rather rewrite the same text anew from his own circumstance and era—to explain how an identical or similar work acquires a radically new meaning when the historical and geographical context changes. Byung-Chul Han (Shanzhai: Deconstruction in Chinese): Addresses the concept of Shanzhai (deconstruction and recreation not as plagiarism, but as a practice of active transformation that questions the myth of the 'unique original'). Aldo Rossi and Helio Piñón (Type and Archetype vs. Model): Asserts that the Type or Archetype is an abstract, invariant structure that the architect reinterprets. Working with an archetype is not 'copying a model while stripping it of meaning,' but engaging in a dialogue with the memory of the discipline. 2. Analysis of the Project in Patagonia The 'foreign language' and montage: Casa Médanos in San Antonio Oeste / Las Grutas does not intend to be a mimetic reproduction of Mies van der Rohe. It takes the floor plan and grammar of the modern pavilion but subjects them to a series of adaptive montage operations. The building as a territorial device: Being neither a forgery nor a generic consumer object, Mario Corea's project functions as a design and environmental device that inhabits and actively interacts with the fragile landscape of the San Matías Gulf. 3. Conclusion: The Reinvention of the 'Aura' at the Edge The rewriting of a universal architectural matrix (the Miesian pavilion) only gains value when recognized as a situated interpretation capable of negotiating between the memory of the formal type and the geographic rigor of the Patagonian environment. The author concludes that the work succeeds in recovering Benjamin's 'aura' at the territory's edge: not through an obsessive search for absolute novelty, but through the mastery of the archetype placed at the service of the site's specificity.
- Materia
